Shingling

The first course, after the installation of the starter course,
begins with a full shingle laid flush with the starter course at the eave and rake
The easiest way to get a clean, straight edge
is to snap a chalk line along the overhang you want

Trim six inches from the first shingle of the second course
Place the second shingle next to the first
Continue across of the roof
Place the butt of the shingle at the top of the dragon teeth of the underlying shingle

Then, move left-to-right or right-to-left, but not straight up the roof
Move left-to-right or right-to-left, but not straight up the roof
Move left-to-right or right-to-left, but not straight up the roof
Move left-to-right or right-to-left, but not straight up the roof in a “rack”

Place the shingles so that it hangs over the eave or drip edge by
one quarter inch to three quarters of an inch
Five inches—eleven inches—seventeen inches
And continue the staggered pattern up the roof

The roof, up the roof
Up the roof

A recommended practice is to stair-step the shingles
with the self-stick strip face up
About every sixth course strike a chalk line to check parallel alignment with the eaves
Begin with installing a starter course

Then, move left-to-right or right-to-left, but not straight up the roof
Move left-to-right or right-to-left, but not straight up the roof
Move left-to-right or right-to-left, but not straight up the roof
Move left-to-right or right-to-left, but not straight up the roof in a “rack”
